Birmingham, Alabama, planning e-bike share system

Published April 20, 2015

MONTREAL (BRAIN) — Canadian company Bewegen will supply about 400 bikes, including 100 e-bikes for a citywide bike share program in Birmingham, Alabama. The program will launch this fall and include 40 docking stations. The company said it's the first bike share program in North America to include e-bikes.

The bikes are being built in collaboration with Procycle, the owner of the Rocky Mountain, Miele and eVox bike brands.

"We are very proud and excited to be working with the City of Birmingham, RPCGB and REV to offer the first electrically assisted bikes as part of a public bike-share system in the Americas. When launched, the Birmingham bike-sharing program will offer its citizens and visitors what we believe will be the best bike-share system in the world," said Alain Ayotte, Bewegen's CEO.

The bikes will include an information system, provided by BikeEmotion, that allows Bewegen's bikes to provide their location at all times.

Users can complete the check-out process directly on the bike with a contactless pass or via a mobile phone app.
