ALLENTOWN, Pa. (BRAIN) — Industry consultant group Gluskin Townley is making a bike brand marketshare report available at a significant discount this summer. The roughly 20-page report contains detailed market share information for 36 bike brands who sell into all distribution channels in the U.S. The report includes unit and dollar sales figures for the brands.
The marketshare rankings are part of a more comprehensive market data report that Bicycle Market Research Institute normally sells for more than $12,000. But BMRI agreed to sell the brand marketshare data through Gluskin Townley for $950 if ordered before the end of July. After that it's $1,250.
The report's data is based on responses from 18,000 statistically balanced U.S. households. Two independent companies conducted the survey in 2013, while BMRI did the editing, analysis and graphics.
Since the data comes from consumers, the brand rankings are not restricted to the speciality retail channel, but instead give a larger picture view of the entire bike market.
And, given the flatness of the bike market in the last decade and a half, that's exactly how the industry should be viewing the market, said Gluskin Townley partner Jay Townley.
"We think it's healthy for the industry to understand the full size of the market," Townley said. "We (in the specialty retail market)tend to be very insular — we’ve got the view that we are the whole world."BMRI has been conducting industry research for more than 20 years and normally sells data packages to the industry for tens of thousands of dollars. Townley said this is likely "the first and the last time" that BMRI will make its data available for under $1,000.
