NEW YORK (BRAIN) — REI Co-op expands its Brompton Bicycle lineup at select stores today with the addition of an electric model.

The six-speed folding Brompton Electric M6L ($4,050) is in REI's product lineup in New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago Lincoln Park, and the Seattle flagship stores. The M6L is designed for urban commuting and offered in Bolt Blue. It joins Brompton's traditional folding bike.

"Over the past 12 months, we worked hard to meet the demand of the global bike boom as a result of COVID by increasing our production by 40%,'' said Peter Yuskauskas, Brompton vice president of U.S. marketing and retail. "By adding the Brompton Electric to our lineup of products offered at REI, we can continue to meet customer demand while making our products more widely available. This comes at an ideal time as well, as many Americans look for alternative transportation to mass transit as we return to a new normal."

The Brompton Electric is designed with a removable battery housed in a carry bag. It also features a motor designed in-house with Williams Advanced Engineering that offers three levels of pedal assist up to 15 mph and a battery range up to 45 miles.

Founded in London in 1975, the Brompton Bicycle models break down to the size of a compact package. In 2018, it introduced its first line of folding e-bikes. Brompton is the largest bike manufacturer in the United Kingdom.
