Bikewagon opening brick-and-mortar store

NORTH SALT LAKE, UT (BRAIN) Wednesday May 2 2012 9:28 AM MT—Online cycling parts and accessories seller Bikewagon is expanding into brick-and-mortar retailing with a grand opening May 4 and 5 for its new full-service bike shop.

Bikewagon launched in 2004 when Dale Majors and his father, George, began selling overstock parts out of their garage in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company now does millions of dollars in annual sales and recently outgrew its leased 13,000-square-foot warehouse.

In December, Bikewagon bought a 25,000-square-foot building that now houses the company’s offices and warehouse in addition to the new 3,000-square-foot retail storefront. “It’s always been in our plans to have a brick-and-mortar store and get more involved in local events. Moving into our new building made that possible,” said Paul Asay, creative/marketing director for Bikewagon.

The store is connected directly to the warehouse, making Bikewagon’s entire inventory available to customers who either walk in or order online for in-store pickup.

In opening the brick-and-mortar operation, Bikewagon will start selling frames and complete bikes. “Most bike brands don’t want their complete bikes sold online. So now we can do that,” Asay said. The shop will carry completes from Surly and Fuji and frames from Ritchey.
