WATERLOO, Wis. (BRAIN) — This fall's Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Waterloo will be the first World Cup to offer equal prize money to the men's and women's pro fields.
The race's host, Trek Bicycle, said it hopes the race sets a precedent.
"Athletes are athletes. Gender, race, size, shape, and ability do not determine a person's value. Desire, ambition, goals, dreams, and heart are not defined by looks. Every person should have equal opportunity to fulfill their potential, and should be equally rewarded for doing so. Trek is proud to host the first World Cup in cycling's history to offer equal payouts to the men's and women's fields," the company said in a statement released Wednesday.
The Trek CX Cup, which includes amateur events in addition to the World Cup, will take place Sept. 22-24, with the inaugural Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Waterloo set for Sunday, Sept. 24. Registration is open now. The weekend's events are free to attend and spectate. Racers and spectators in need of hotel accommodations are encouraged to book now, as Madison, Wisconsin, will host a large software conference that commands much of the city's available hotels in the days immediately following the race.
