MELBOURNE, Australia (BRAIN)—Australia import figures for the month of March show a continued slow trend in children’s bikes, while adult bikes remained steady, according to data released by the nonprofit Cycling Promotion Fund.
In March, 17,343 children’s bikes were imported into Australia compared with 31,401 during the same month in 2010. For adults, 33,123 were shipped into the country, up from 24,543 from March of last year.
For the first three months of the year, 41,228 children’s bikes were imported compared with 64,648 for the same period last year, and 113,373 adult bikes came into Australia, nearly on par with the 114,891 imported during the first quarter of 2010. Total imports were down 14 percent in the first quarter compared with last year.
Still the 154,601 bikes imported during the first quarter ranks among the highest in figures dating back to 1998, behind 2007, 2008 and 2010. Imports hit a record high in 2007 with 1.4 million for the year.
