PALO ALTO, CA (BRAIN)—Cyclists who participate in the Canary Century anti-cancer benefit ride on May 28 can win a custom Cervélo race bike (pictured) and ride alongside top San Francisco Bay Area pros including Freddie Rodriguez, John Novitsky, Joao Correia, Brooke Miller and more. Other prizes include a Canary Century ride kit and the opportunity to pedal with members of Team Garmin-Cervélo.
Sponsored by the Canary Foundation, all proceeds from the Canary Century will go to the Stanford Cancer Center and Stanford's Canary Center to benefit research into early detection of cancer. As of the last week in April 33 teams and 222 riders had signed up, committing to raise $220,000.
Bay Area pro riders will hold training seminars and spin classes in the weeks prior to the Canary Century to help cyclists hone their pedaling form and fitness. To sign up for and see details on the training seminars go to: www.canarycentury.com/training-seminars/
Registration is $100 and all participants must commit to raising $400. Top fund raisers will go home with a custom Canary-themed SE R5 Cervelo race bike, a Cervélo S3 or R3 race bike, depending on the amount raised. To win the Canary Century ride kit from top cycling apparel maker Castelli, participants must raise $1,000 or register five friends.
Riders can choose from three routes (100 miles, 62 miles or 50 kilometers) through sun-dappled redwoods and along the majestic California coast. Food, wine and beer will be provided at a post-ride barbecue.
The Canary Foundation is covering 100 percent of the cost of holding the event, which means all proceeds will go to Stanford's pioneering cancer early detection efforts.
