Bikes Belong Uniting Cyclists’ Voices

Published March 18, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—Less than a week after launching peopleforbikes.org, nearly 4,000 people have already signed an online pledge to make our world a better place to ride.

Bikes Belong launched the Web site at the National Bike Summit last week as part of a grassroots initiative to unite one million voices in support of a better future for biking.

“If you remember nothing about tonight except this: there are 250,000 bike advocates and 50 million people who ride bikes. How do we get more people involved?” asked Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, at the Summit’s opening reception. “Imagine if we could unify the voices of one million cyclists into a unified movement of people who believe.”

Developed by Colle+McVoy, the Minneapolis ad agency behind the Caribou Coffee brand makeover, the viral campaign aims to unite people who believe that cycling is important and should be supported.

The campaign is anchored by a Web site, which asks people to sign a pledge in support of a better future for bicycling—one that's safer, more convenient, and more appealing for everyone.

Bikes Belong hopes to collect one million names by spreading the word through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Their collective voice will send a message to our elected leaders, the media and the public that bicycling should have their full support.

“The more names we get, the more powerful this movement will become,” said Blumenthal.
