PORTLAND, OR (BRAIN)—Oregon Manifest’s highly successful Constructor’s Design Challenge is moving to a biennial format.
“The 2009 Constructor’s Design Challenge quickly established itself as a legitimate, fresh approach to promoting custom bicycle frame builders,” said the event’s director, Jocelyn SyCip. “We see tremendous potential for the Constructor’s Design Challenge to become an international showcase for the craft and culture of hand built bicycles. This is clearly an event with staying power deserving of greater cultivation.”
Oregon Manifest plans to scale back the overall event series substantially from 2009’s broadly focused six weekend series, in order to hone the Constructor’s Design Challenge into a world-class event. The shorter program and new biennial timeframe will allow Oregon Manifest the ability to devote maximum resources to the Constructor’s Design Challenge. Greater time between each challenge will provide bicycle frame builders a generous production window to present best solutions to the design criteria. Dates for the 2011 event, set to remain in Portland, Oregon, will be announced in late spring of 2010.
The 2009 debut of the Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Design Challenge, presented by Chris King Precision Components, featured 29 bicycle frame builders representing seven states across the nation. Builders presented best solutions to a transportation style bicycle, putting their entries to a rugged road test and under the scrutiny of a panel of seasoned bicycle experts.
From October 2 to November 8, 2009, over 5,000 people viewed the 12 winning solutions exhibited in the Oregon Manifest Bike Union in Portland, Oregon’s downtown Pearl District. A coffee table book conceived around the event is currently in progress.
