Published August 10, 2009

TAIPEI, Taiwan (BRAIN)—Sales data for the month of July for three of Taiwan’s largest bicycle manufacturers is a mix of news, according to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

Merida posted a healthy 14.8 percent increase in sales in July while Giant, the world’s largest manufacturer, recorded an 8.7 percent dip when compared to last July. Ideal also recorded a one-month sales decline of 7 percent.

Merida’s July sales topped $36.1 million compared to $31.5 million a year ago, while Giant posted $37.7 million for the month compared to $41.3 million last year. Ideal, a much smaller company, reported $4.5 million in July revenue compared with $4.8 million last year.

However, year-over-year sales to date reflect generally flat growth for Giant and Merida, while Ideal has seen its seven-month sales soar 57 percent when compared to the same period last year.

Year-to-date sales for Giant dipped slightly by less than 1 percent to $251.3 million compared to $252.6 million in 2009, while Merida was up just 2.1 percent to $170 million. Ideal, on the other hand, posted a 57 percent jump in sales to $68 million compared to $43.3 through July of last year.
