NEWBURY PARK, CA (BRAIN)—Earlier this week more than 150 bike riders making up Hershey’s Tour de Pink rolled into New York City, completing a four-day trip that began from Chocolate World in Hershey, PA.
The cyclists' arrival in the Big Apple marked the end of a major fundraiser benefiting the Young Survival Coalition, the premier international network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the critical concerns and issues unique to young women.
Each rider raised a minimum of $2,500 dollars and Hershey’s contributed a check for $300,000. As a result, the Young Survival Coalition received $1,000,000 from the event. There are nearly 250,000 women in the United States under the age of 40 currently living with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women aged 15 – 54.
This is the second year that Giant for Women has been a sponsor of the Hershey’s Tour de Pink.
“Our role and support of the ride was multifaceted; we provided eight bikes to breast cancer survivors, most of whom would not have participated were it not for the gift. We supplied incentives for fundraisers, helping to increase the amount raised by riders. Giant also provided on-the-ride support with one of the Ride Giant Demo rigs, stopping to assist riders with tools and repairs. Most important, we were part of a whole contingent of riders wanting to do as much as they could for breast cancer awareness," said Tiffany Brown, Giant’s women’s program manager.
Giant dealer Knapp’s Cyclery in Trenton, NJ, has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Tour de Pink over the years, helping assemble bikes and provide mechanical support. Other Giant dealers having participated include A Bicycle Shop and Canal Street Bicycles in New York City, Miller’s in Mamaroneck, NY, Bicycle Garage of Indy in Indianapolis, IN, Art’s Cyclery in San Luis Obispo, CA, and Lewis and Clark Outfitters in Rogers, AR.
