HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui (BRAIN)—The moratorium on commercial downhill bike rides in Haleakala National Park on Maui will continue until a full evaluation of the impact from the activity is completed, according to the National Park Service.
The "safety stand down" started on Oct. 10 following the Sept. 26 death of a tourist who had lost control of her bicycle and struck a van.
"The stand down remains in effect," said Haleakala National Park superintendent Marilyn Parris to Pacific Business News. "And I have met with representatives of the five bicycle companies that held downhill tour permits in the park to discuss this decision."
The tour companies will be authorized to conduct van tours in the park while the commercial-services plan is completed.
