Published May 8, 2011

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany (BRAIN)—Research released by Eurobike shows that more than 4.1 million Germans buy a new bike every year, and nearly 70 percent of those purchases are made at one of 5,640 specialty retail stores.

To be considered specialty, a retail shop must have total sales area of more than 1,000 square meters, according to the German Bicycle Retail Association (VDZ).

Nearly half of all revenue in the industry, or about 1 billion euros, are generated in retail stores with annual sales between 100,000 euros and 1 million euros, the report said. Sales of replacement parts and accessories make up 20 percent of total revenue in the retail trade and repair work constitutes another 13 percent.

Retailers from Germany will gather at the Eurobike trade show from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 in the lakeside resort town of Friedrichshafen in Southern Germany. Next year, the show will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29 through Saturday, Sept. 1.
