USA BMX pulls in new editor

Published February 7, 2013

GILBERT, AZ (BRAIN) — USA BMX has hired Jason “Shooter” McGuire as editor and photographer of Pull Magazine, which goes out to the race association’s more than 65,000 members.

McGuire is an avid BMX racer who grew up on his bike, spending most of his time at the track. He started racing at age 9. He worked as a freelance commercial advertising and BMX photographer after graduating from Northwest College with a photographic communications degree. He also was a contributor to Pull in 2012.

“We're excited to see our staff here at USA BMX grow,” said Craig “Gork” Barrette, who served as editor for Pull magazine the past year and a half, and handles communications for USA BMX. “With Jason on board, we plan to add more feature stories to the membership magazine and focus on building up the heroes of the sport. Jason can take some great pictures and seems to be a perfect fit with the USA BMX staff and our goals for the direction of Pull magazine.”

Barrette will become Pull’s managing editor.

“Our sport is growing faster than ever and it is our duty to keep pumping out vital news, great photography and in-depth features issues,” McGuire said. “I look forward to this new opportunity.”

The magazine was formerly published by the American Bicycle Association before ABA merged with the National Bicycle League. Since its first issue in 1978, it’s gone through several name and format changes. When the ABA and NBL merged in 2011 to become USA BMX, the publication was renamed “Pull,” a common term in BMX racing. USA BMX prints nearly 40,000 copies (one per household) and prints 10 issues per year.

McGuire will work out of the USA BMX’s Gilbert, Arizona, headquarters. He can be reached at (480) 961-1903 or jmcguire@usabmx.com
