UCI BMX Racing World Championships: May 12-18, 2024

The UCI BMX Racing World Championships returns to Rock Hill May 12-18 at the Rock Hill BMX Supercross Track, 1307 Riverwalk Parkway. Second only in prominence to the Olympic games, the UCI World Championships feature fierce competition among world-class amateur and elite athletes. This year, riders and countries are vying for crucial points to qualify for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

More than 45 countries will be represented by an estimated 3,500 riders. Participants are expected to stay an average of 10 days, generating a projected direct economic impact of $25 million, excluding airfare. Locally, dozens of area riders have qualified to participate in the event.

The week will kick off on Friday, May 10 at 6 PM with the Opening Festival at Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill. The ceremony will include a welcome and opening remarks highlighted by an original composition fanfare from the Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra, commemorating the occasion. The celebration will continue at Fountain Park until 10 PM with food trucks, vendors and entertainment for riders and fans of all ages.

Racing will begin on May 12 and run through May 18. Admission is $10 per day or $65 for an event pass. Tickets can be purchased at the event website 2024BMXWorlds.com. On May 18, admission will be free for all York County residents and their guests with proof of residency.

The final day of racing on May 18 will feature the elite riders vying for the title of UCI World Champion. Among the US elite riders are Alise Willoughby (2016 Olympic Silver Medalist) and Felicia Stancil (2022 UCI World Champion).

A Local Organizing Committee (LOC), under the direction of the City of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism department, is seeking volunteers to assist during the event. Volunteer shifts are still available, with roles including shuttle host/greeter, scoring, checkpoint control and translator services needed. Adults and youth ages 16+ can help. Register at 2024BMXWorlds.com/volunteer. Volunteers will receive an invitation to a volunteer kickoff event May 9 at the track where they'll receive a t-shirt, swag bag and assignment details.

City Council has approved relaxed sign standards for local businesses to help show support for this event. For the month of May, businesses will be allowed to utilize an additional 32-square-foot temporary sign or banner to welcome BMX riders and fans.

Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body for the sport of cycling, announced in September 2019 that Rock Hill won the bid to host the 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Championships after Rock Hill successfully hosted the event in 2017. Since 2000, the only other US city to host the event has been Louisville, Kentucky in 2001. Recent UCI World Championships were held in Glasgow, Scotland (2023), Nantes, France (2022) and Arnhem, Netherlands (2021).
