BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — According to the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association June report, supplier shipments over the first six months of this year fell 6 percent to 1.2 million units from 1.3 million last year. Sales fell to $551.5 million from $581.3 million over the first half of 2015.
In spite of declining sales overall, some categories posted impressive growth. E-bikes saw a 67 percent jump in sales, netting suppliers $6.7 million in extra business. Sales of town and commuter bikes also saw strong growth, netting suppliers an extra $4.3 million in sales they did not have last year.
Suppliers saw declining sales of mountain bikes, down 5 percent, and lifestyle bikes, down 17 percent. And while road bike sales were down overall, for the first time in a long while performance road bikes sales saw an increase, up 3 percent.
Fat bikes appear to have peaked last year with sales in this category falling 24 percent since the start of the year.
