VIENNA, VA (BRAIN)—Spokes, Etc. has opened a new store in Fairfax, Virginia, marking the fifth location for the Vienna-based bicycle retailer.
The 7,000 square foot store, located about 20 miles outside of Washington, D.C., is in Fairfax City’s Kamp Washington, a commercial area with such major merchants and restaurants as Borders, Chipotle, Office Depot and Walgreens as well as many local businesses, according to a press release.
While Spokes, Etc. had been interested in the Fairfax market for several years, it decided to open a store there when Washington Bicycle Center, which had a long-established presence in the area, closed its doors in March, said Jim Strang, the company’s president. “We were fortunate to recruit several key employees, including one of the owners, for the team that’s running our new location,” Strang said.
Strang’s partner, Bob Fadel, said the availability of a free-standing building with ample parking and a prime location at the intersection of two major roads—Route 50 and Lee Highway—also factored into the company’s decision to expand.
The new store has a full service center and a display floor dedicated to Spokes’ bicycle lines, clothing and accessories. The designer was Maginniss + del Ninno Architects. HITT Construction was the general contractor.
Spokes, Etc was founded in 1985 and has five stores throughout Northern Virginia. In addition to Fairfax, Spokes’ locations include two in Alexandria, one in Vienna and one in Ashburn.
