WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, Bell Sports/Giro is voluntarily recalling its Merit helmets because the straps on some models manufactured before January might disengage when pulled with relatively little force.
The recall affects 4,611 helmets, and Giro said it is not aware of any incidents. The affected helmets were sold in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The helmets can be identified by the model name "Merit" on the rear/side and also by an inner helmet sticker with the model name and identifier GH230.
Consumers should stop using the helmet immediately and contact Giro for a free replacement. Giro Customer Service can be reached toll-free at (800) 456-2355 (Option 4) between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or via email at consumersupport@bellgiro.com.
The helmets were manufactured in China and sold by Backcountry.com, Freewheel Bike West Bank, Velotech, Epicenter Cycling, and other retailers.
The CPSC is interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this recall or involve a different hazard with the same product.
