CHICAGO, IL (BRAIN) — SRAM is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and authorities in other nations to recall some Red 10-speed medium-cage rear derailleurs.
The company said the derailleur's parallelogram can jam and prevent shifting.
"This presents a safety issue," the company said in a press release Wednesday. A CPSC press release said "the rear pivot pin can loosen or dislodge causing the rear derailleur to jam or interfere with the wheel, posing a fall hazard." The CPSC said about 1,700 units were affected and that SRAM has received reports of 43 incidents in the U.S. with one report of scrapes and bruises.
The affected derailleurs were manufactured between September 2012 and March this year and were sold between September 2012 to November 2013.
SRAM is retrieving and replacing all affected derailleurs and has quarantined the relevant products that are still in the distribution pipeline. The company is advising consumers to immediately stop using bikes with the relevant derailleur.
Affected derailleurs have a serial number between 31T2000000 – 11T39999999. The serial number is located on the back of the cage as circled in red in the above photo.
Dealers with the affected derailleurs installed on a bike can exchange the derailleur with their local SRAM DSD, TechCenter or SRAM distributor. Return of the existing derailleur is required; they will be replaced with a SRAM 1091R model.
