Interbike plans downhill race

Published July 31, 2012

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA (BRAIN)It was just a matter of time.

After organizers of the Interbike Expo hired former pro downhill champion Leigh Donovan as an account executive, a downhill race during the show's annual OutDoor Demo was a no-brainer.

The Bootleg Canyon Downhill Challenge will be the first organized competitive event organized by Interbike, although various races have been held during Interbike, including CrossVegas.

The race will be run both days of the OutDoor Demo, September 17-18, at Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City, Nevada. The event will rely on Strava.com to track racers attempting to beat a time set by Donovan.

Donovan said she is up for the challenge.

“This is going to be a fun event and I’m stoked to be a part of it,” said Donovan. “I encourage anyone with DH skills to come on out and see if you can beat a 40-year-old woman with a desk job.”

Event sponsors include Scott Sports, Oakley, Go-Pro, One Industries, Shimano, Strava, Troy Lee Designs, FOX, Sock Guy and others. A prize list will be offered for both male and female riders with the fastest times each day, the most attempts each day and the overall fastest time.

Riders will need to create a free Strava account to participate. They also will be required to sign waivers and wear protective equipment.

Jumbo screens at the demo base area will show live video feeds of the competitors.
