Bike festival to honor late retailer Hughes
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (BRAIN)—The fourth annual San Luis Obispo Bikefest this Saturday, May 12, is dedicated to the memory of longtime local retailer and cycling advocate Ira Hughes, who died in December seven months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was 58.
Hughes started working at Joyce Cycle Center in 1965 at age 12 and bought the store in 1975, changing its name to Ira's Bike Shop. He was a beloved member of the San Luis Obispo community and was honored by the City Council for his community service shortly before he died.
Ira’s Memorial Bikefest will kick off with a bike parade through San Luis Obispo’s Arroyo Grande Village and include a party with live music, sponsorship by New Belgium Brewing Co. and raffle prizes from SLO-based Lezyne.

People for Bikes gets half million signature
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) Thursday May 10 2012 3:50 PM MT—PeopleforBikes.org was launched two years ago with the goal of collecting one million signatures from folks who support cycling. Recently the group reached the halfway point with a signature gathered at the New York bike expo.
"A group of this size has considerable clout. When we ask you to speak up on behalf of bicycling, Congress listens," a PFB statement said.
The group points out that if every person who has signed already recruits just one friend to sign, they will hit the one million goal. Sign the pledge on Peopleforbikes.org.
130 rides, 11 countries registered for CycloFemme
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) Thursday May 10 2012 12:18 PM MT—May 13th CycloFemme is a "global women's cycling day" that will include more than 130 events in 11 countries.
CycloFemme organizer Girl Bike Love said events are now planned in Italy, Germany, Mexico, the UK, Australia and elsewhere.

“It is our hope to see CycloFemme tattoos show up in the peloton at the Tour of California on the 13th. It would be a monumental showing of support for women’s cycling and racing,” said CycloFemme founder Sarai Snyder.
