HILDEBRAN, NC (BRAIN)—Business North Carolina has named DeFeet International "Business of the Year" for 2012. The award is especially meaningful to managers of the company, which was devastated by a fire in 2001.
Company founder and president Shane Cooper said the 20-year-old company is stronger than ever. "We are no longer a teenager," he said.
Cooper said an enthusiasm for outdoor activities where his products are used has driven the company's success.
"Love for the cycling, running and outdoor industries that we build for is what drives us and what made this possible. They really are special markets. The pursuits that are healthy and life-enhancing. Completely worthwhile ways to spend your time personally and in business."
The magazine article notes that Cadel Evans was wearing DeFeet socks when he won the Tour de France this year, and recounts Cooper's background, which includes a stint as a rock musician and amateur bike racer. According to the article, DeFeet now has 35 employees and expects sales of $4.5 million this year.
