LAGUNA HILLS, CA (BRAIN)—Bicycle Retailer & Industry News is conducting its first ever industry-wide “Green Survey.”
The magazine, dropping its longstanding supplier and distributor survey, is initiating new BRAINy awards recognizing companies and retailers who are making a sustained effort to go green.
“We want to get an idea about how environmentally conscientious we, as an industry, have become,” said Megan Tompkins, the magazine’s editor. “We want to encourage companies to consider taking small steps toward lessening their environmental footprint,” she said.
For example, the survey asks whether businesses have in-house recycling programs for cans, bottles and waste paper. Are companies making better use of digital technology to reduce paper usage? Have businesses made an effort to replace old light fixtures with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs? Do businesses offer a financial inducement for staff who ride, walk, carpool or take mass transit to work?
“We ask some basic questions that suppliers and retailers can answer in our online survey. We want as many people as possible to feel like they have an opportunity to participate,” Tompkins said.
The magazine will award BRAINys to three suppliers and two retailers. Categories include participants with sales of more than $100 million; mid-size companies between $30 million and $100 million in sales; and categories for smaller companies and retailers. All participants will be included in a drawing for a $100 American Express Gift Check.
Harvey Research, a respected New York research firm, is conducting the web-based survey. It will take participants five minutes or less to complete. Since this is a self-nominating survey, only one survey per company or store will be reviewed.
The awards will be presented as part of the 11th annual Bicycle Leadership Conference Jan. 18-20 in San Diego, California. The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association (BPSA) is this year’s conference organizer.
Additional BRAINy awards include Lifetime Achievement, International Person of the Year, Retail Advocate of the Year, Supplier Advocate of the Year and Individual Advocate of the Year.
On the retail side, the magazine will again give BRAINys to honor the Best Pro Shop, Best Family Shop, Most Improved Retailer, Best Triathlon Shop, and Best Mountain Bike Shop. In addition to industry and retail awards, the magazine will again announce its Top 100 Retailers at the conference.
