CARBONDALE, CO (BRAIN) — The Ultralite pedal system lives up to its name, with a claimed weight some 100 grams lighter than any other road clipless pedal on the market. The new pedal is being made by Ultralite Sports in Colorado and will be displayed for the first time at Interbike next week.
Ultralite will show two models, the Cirrus TI and the Nimbus STL. The Cirrus TI has a titanium spindle and a claimed weight of 112 grams — 72 grams for the pedals and 40 grams for the cleats. The Nimbus STL has a steel spindle and total weight is 146 grams.
Ultralite was founded by road racer Bill Emerson and product design engineer Neal Beidleman. Emerson noted that modern, stiff shoes allow use of pedals with smaller cleats than most on the market.
Ultralite pedals have two cleat options: one with four degrees of pedal float and one fixed. There are also two spring options: one that allows easier release and one offering a more secure retention.
The titanium model will retail for $450 and has a maximum rider weight of 200 pounds. The steel spindle pedal will retail for $315 and has a max rider weight of 300 pounds.
