SACRAMENTO, Calif. (BRAIN) — In a partnership between public, private and non-profit organizations, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has begun accepting pre-orders for the state's first speciality plate focused on bicycle use. The DMV is accepting refundable payments for the plates; if it receives 7,500 pre-orders, the plates will be produced, if not, deposits will be refunded or supporters will request a 12-month extension.
Proceeds from the sale of the plates will be used to fund grants to bike-related statewide coalitions, community-based organizations, nonprofit organizations, county health departments and other organizations. The program is being supported by the California Department of Public Health, nonprofits including PeopleForBikes, League of American Bicyclists and the California Bicycle Coalition, and private companies including Felt Bicycles, Clif Bar and 10 Speed Coffee.
Special plates will be available for California-registered cars, trucks, trailers, or motorcycles. An original sequential plate costs $50, a new personalized special plate is $103. An existing personalized plate can be exchanged for a special plate for $103.
If 7,500 pre-paid applications are collected and submitted to the DMV, the DMV will officially begin the program implementation, which can take up to an additional 12 months.
