MISSOULA, Mont. (BRAIN) — Adventure Cycling Association is accepting submissions for its new Youth Touring and Leadership Scholarship, with two candidates selected to participate in one of the association’s 2014 education courses. The scholarship covers airfare, bike and gear rentals and course fees.
The goal of the scholarship is to provide college students, ages 18-25, access to bicycle travel through either an Adventure Cycling Leadership Training Course or an Introduction to Road Touring Course. Upon completion of either course, scholarship winners will perform outreach activities in their communities to promote bicycle touring.
The scholarship program was developed at the request of Adventure Cycling Association members as a way to sponsor young people on tour and share the experience of bike travel. An anonymous family made a large matching donation to the scholarship to encourage members to raise money for the fund.
“The only reason we were able to create this scholarship is because our members and donors want to ensure that the next generation learns to love bicycle touring,” said Jim Sayer, executive director of Adventure Cycling. “We hope that the program will continue next year and grow.”
The application deadline is Feb. 28, and application information is available at the Adventure Cycling website. Applicants are asked to submit references, two essays and proof of college or university enrollment with their application.
