CARLSBAD, CA 26 JANUARY 2021– Continuing their support for St. Augustine’s University and the country’s first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) cycling team, Canyon Bicycles is donating a complete Ultimate CF SLX bike to be raffled off as a fundraiser. With the same frame that is raced at the top-tier of international competition by teams like Movistar, Alpecin-Fenix and Canyon//SRAM Racing, this custom-painted Ultimate from the world's leading direct-to-consumer bicycle company will feature SAU team colors and a quote from legendary Black cycling champion Major Taylor: “In a word I was a pioneer and therefore had to blaze my own trail.”

“Canyon continues to demonstrate its commitment to increasing diversity in collegiate cycling,” said SAU Cycling Team Coach Dr. Mark Janas. “We greatly appreciate all of the company’s efforts to support the SAU team. Our plan is to pay it forward and hopefully inspire teams at other HBCUs to launch.”

“Our mission is to inspire riders to ride. Fundamentally, that means we want the cycling world to be more inclusive and diverse: we want people from all backgrounds to experience the freedom and joy bikes can bring to their lives,” said Blair Clark, Canyon US President. “Our ongoing support for the nation’s first HBCU cycling team is part of how we share our passion for riding with all communities and we love the idea of raising funds for the SAU team by raffling off the same bike that is raced by professionals at the very highest level of the sport.”

In April 2020, Saint Augustine’s University launched the first HBCU cycling team in the country through its School of Business, Management, & Technology. Approved and registered by USA Cycling (www.USAcycling.org) to compete in the collegiate club Atlantic division against dozens of other schools in the Southeast, the team is coached by professors Umar Muhammad and Dr. Mark Janas, both of whom teach sport management courses at Saint Augustine’s University. Canyon is producing a video series documenting the team’s development which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVtfi70OYuQTXKx3j-5LspO8E9t0xOY5-
