MONTEREY, CA (BRAIN)—As retailers marched through the month of March, one of the warmest on record, it appears that bicycle sales were relatively flat, but the average selling price per unit was up.

BPSA reports $50 million sales gain for 29ers in 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—Suppliers imported 27 percent more bikes in January compared to the year prior, for an increase of 267,153 units, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Commerce Department.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—According to Leisure Trends Group, overall merchandise sales at IBDS during September were up 5 percent in units and 9 percent in dollars compared to September 2010, totaling $263 million. That’s up $21 million compared to the same month last year.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—Bike sales were up 7 percent through April, according to Bicycle Product Suppliers Association sell-through data from the Leisure Trends Group (LTG). Most of that growth is coming from road bikes and 29-inch mountain bikes.
MOUNT PROSPECT, IL (BRAIN)—Bicycle riding has increased 2.9 percent in 2010 from the previous year, according to the National Sporting Goods Association director of research and information services Dan Kasen.
“I think the [stronger] economy had something to do with it,” Kasen said of the modest gain.
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN)—Independent bike retailers have adopted point-of-sale systems at the same pace as other specialty sporting goods retailers. Based on a recent survey conducted by Leisure Trends Group, 88.2 percent of bike retailers currently use a POS system.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—Biking (Road, Mountain and BMX) came in second to Running when measured by frequency of participation among adults (25-plus), according to the 2011 Outdoor Recreation Participation Top-line Report.
