BicycleBlueBook redesigns website to funnel traffic toward shops

Published January 24, 2017

SAN JOSE, Calif. (BRAIN) — BicycleBlueBook.com has been a popular website for years for bike owners curious about their ride's value — it now attracts about three quarters of a million monthly visitors. Now the company has reconfigured its site to make it more likely that visitors will navigate to the website of a nearby IBD participating in its Authorized Trade-In Partner program.

BicycleBlueBook's IBD network has grown from a 100 dealers to more than 750 in the last year.

The new site still lets consumers quickly check the value of their bike for "Private Party" sale. As with used auto valuations, the trade-in value is lower than the private party sale value. Rather than offering the trade-in value side-by-side with the private sale value on the site, consumers are now presented with a locator map with links to participating retailers. The trade-in value is calculated by a BicycleBlueBook widget that is on the dealer site, not the BicycleBlueBook site.

"We hope that trading in a bike one day is as commonplace as trading in a car or motorcycle," said Ira Becker, the president of BicycleBlueBook.com.

Under BicycleBlueBook's program, retailers confirm the value of a customer's trade-in at the shop. If the customer wants to go ahead, the dealer takes the bike and ships it to BicycleBlueBook, which pays the dealer and sells the bike on its online marketplace. The consumer gets a store credit that can be put toward a new bike or any other purchase.

BicycleBlueBook also is launching new mobile device apps that make it easier for store employees to manage the entire trade-in process on the sales floor or even outside the shop.
