HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (BRAIN) — Wheelhouse Detroit Bike Shop will open its second location in May, at 9401 Joseph Campau Street in Hamtramck, a community about five miles north of downtown Detroit. The first store, which opened in 2008, is located in Detroit's Rivertown area.
"The new, larger store will have 2,600 square feet of space to showcase bicycles, accessories and active-wear," said owner Kelli Kavanaugh. "It will highlight brands that are made in the USA and feature products that are unavailable elsewhere in the metro Detroit region."
Wheelhouse Detroit carries Detroit Bikes, Sun Bicycles, Kona Bikes, Brooklyn Bicycle Co., Origin8 and Opus Bike and accessories from Green Guru, Chrome Industries, Banjo Brothers, Timbuk2, Park Tool, Topeak, Saris, Planet Bike, Kryptonite, Bell, Giro, Bern, Michelin, Continental and Selle Royale.
Wheelhouse will be Hamtramck's only bike shop, and is located on the Inner Circle Greenway. The 26-mile pathway will eventually circle Detroit while passing through Hamtramck, Highland Park and a little bit of Dearborn.
Kavanaugh said that the variety and density of Hamtramck's business district drew her to locate there. "I love that Joseph Campau is a traditional 'Main Street,' both in appearance and character," she said. "I am excited to be a part of this vibrant and diverse community.
"We see the two Wheelhouse locations complementing one another," she added. "The Riverfront spot will continue to be the anchor for Greater Downtown residents and workers and will serve as the primary spot for tours and rentals. Our Hamtramck location offers more retail space to increase our inventory of bicycles, accessories, gear, clothing and a larger service department, while serving Hamtramck and surrounding Detroit neighborhoods. "
Wheelhouse Detroit is the only female-owned bike shop in metro Detroit. Kavanaugh is a board member of the National Bicycle Dealers Association and serves as the ride director for Tour de Troit, which produces the state's largest bike ride each September.
