Specialized expands aero brake lever recall

Published September 4, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN) — Specialized has expanded its recall of some Tektro aero brake levers included with its S-Works Shiv framesets and bikes.

The company earlier this year recalled about 600 levers that were sold with 2010 and 2011 Shiv Modules and 2012 Shiv TT Modules. Now it has expanded the recall to include about 100 levers included with 2012 S-Works Shiv and Shiv TT modules. The affected levers were also sold as aftermarket products for these modules.

The adjuster cap and brake cable can slide out of position and make the brakes non-operational. Specialized is aware of one incident worldwide in which the rider lost the function of both brakes.

This recall applies to the Tektro TL-83 brake levers. The TL-83 is a version of the TL-720 brake lever, modified with a quick release slot at the top of the lever arm and designed exclusively for use with aerodynamic handlebars sold as original equipment on these modules.

They are black aluminum and model number "TL-720" can be read on the side of the lever arm when braking action is applied.

They were sold at Specialized dealers from May 2011 to June 2012.

Consumers should immediately stop riding modules equipped with TL-83 brake levers and return the levers or modules to an authorized Specialized Bicycle Components retailer for free replacement brake levers.

Consumer also can contact Specialized customer service between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday at (877) 808-8154 or visit the Specialized website.
