WASHINGTON, DC (BRAIN) Tuesday June 5 2012 10:29 AM MT—A new study by the National Retail Federation found that retailers think organized retail crime is on the rise, but that company executives and law enforcement are increasingly aware of the problem.
The NRF’s eighth annual Organized Retail Crime Survey found that 96 percent of respondents say their company has been the victim of organized retail crime in the past year, up from 94.5 percent last year. Another 87.7 percent said such activity in the United States has grown over the past three years.
"What this tells us is that as retailers and law enforcement become more aware of and more proactive in pursuing organized retail crime gangs, criminals have become more desperate and brazen in their efforts, stopping at nothing to get their hands on large quantities of merchandise,” said Rich Mellor, NR's vice president of loss prevention.
The study found that retailers report that cargo theft continues to grow. Some 52 percent of companies said they have been a victim of cargo theft in the past 12 months, up from 50 percent last year.
The survey also indicated a growing trend in the level of violence retailers see when organized criminal gangs are apprehended (15 percent of incidents vs. 13 percent in 2011).
Zoic offers giveaway to shop employees
SAN DIEGO, CA (BRAIN) Tuesday June 5 2012 10:12 AM MT—Zoic is borrowing an idea from Willie Wonka and The Office's Michael Scott by placing a $500 certificate inside a clothing shipment to bike shops once a month.

All dealers who order from Zoic are eligible; regardless of whether it’s their first order, preseason order or fill-in. The only restrictions are that a certificate is only good for 30 days, it must be used for a single order and there is a limit of one Golden Ticket per dealer per year.

DealerCamp to feature big money, high altitude cyclocross race
PARK CITY, UT (BRAIN) Tuesday June 5 2012 10:37 AM MT—July's DealerCamp will feature the Raleigh Midsummer Nights Cyclocross Race, which is being billed as the country's highest altitude and richest non-series cyclocross race. The race will be held the evening of July 24, the opening day of DealerCamp. The prize list totals $25,000 and includes two "contract with Raleigh" prices for the top male and female finishers without pro contracts.
The race will be held at Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Basin at 7,700 feet elevation. The course will head through the middle of the DealerCamp expo.
"We are excited to work with DealerCamp on the 2nd annual Mid Summer Nights Cyclocross Race, and to give a rider a chance to secure sponsorship for the season. This event continues to show that cyclocross is an intense, fun and inclusive community, and doesn't need to be confined exclusively to the fall season," said Chris Speyer, vice president at Raleigh America.
Categories will include Elite men and women, category 3 and 4 men and women, and a "Wheelers and Dealers" category for industry employees.

Boulder to hold public hearing Tuesday on race finish
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) Tuesday June 5 2012 10:48 AM MT—The Boulder, Colorado, city council is holding a public hearing Tuesday evening to discuss the planned stage finish of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge on Flagstaff Mountain. The meeting starts at 6 pm in city council chambers.
The penultimate stage of the second edition of the pro stage race is set to start in Golden and finish with a three-mile climb up Flagstaff, after making a loop through downtown Boulder.
But some local activists have questioned the legality of the August 25 finish, as the finish area is part of Boulder County Open Space, where competitive events are banned. Supporters point out that the road itself is not part of the open space.
Boulder, the home of the former Coors Classic stage race, did not host a start or finish of the 2011 edition of the USAPCC.
