Sports Chalet's Sales Rise as Losses Decrease

Published August 4, 2011

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, CA (BRAIN)—Sports Chalet saw its sales total $82.8 million, an increase of 3.9 percent in the first quarter compared with a year ago. Sports Chalet, however, still reported a loss of $0.8 million, or 6 cents a share. Last year at the same time the company reported losses of $1.9 million, or 14 cents a share.

Spurring the increase was online sales, up 66 percent over last year.

"During the first quarter, we continued to experience positive trends in comparable store sales, online sales and inventory productivity," said Craig Levra, CEO of Sports Chalet. "We are excited about the considerable improvement of our results and continue to implement our strategies to return to profitability."

Sports Chalet was founded by Norbert and Irene Olberz in 1959. Norbert Olberz died last month at age 86.
