SAN DIEGO (BRAIN) — Speedplay, Inc. is now selling a public version of the pedals it has provided to some sponsored pro road riders for the Spring Classics for several seasons.
The Zero Pavé Pedal System has a patented, minimalist design built specifically to handle the conditions of the cobbled classics. The company said the pedals will also be useful for participants in gravel grinder races and similar events.
Based on Speedplay's Zero pedals, the Pavé pedals shave non-essential pedal body material to ensure entry and release in wet and dirty environments. The Zero Pavé was first ridden to victory by Fabian Cancellara in the 2006 Paris-Roubaix. Since then, the pedals have been ridden to victory in races including Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Ghent-Wevelgem, and Strade Bianche. The Zero Pavé was most recently used in the rainy, cobbled fifth stage of the 2014 Tour de France.
"I knew that harsh conditions could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of races on pavé," said Speedplay's CEO, Richard Bryne. "My goal with the design was to provide our riders with the best equipment for such unpredictable conditions."
All Zero Pavé Pedal Systems are hand-built at Speedplay headquarters in San Diego and include special Zero Pavé Edition cleats.
