BOULDER, CO— The PeopleForBikes (PFB) Coalition board of directors approved seven grants to support bike parks and pump tracks, ratified the organization’s 2020 Workplan and budget, celebrated the addition of 46 new coalition member companies and reflected on 2019 achievements at its semi-annual gathering on December 10.
This was the first board meeting following PFB’s July 1 merger with the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association—a unification that has created a streamlined organization that speaks for the bicycle industry with one strong voice. The board discussed its new committee structure that has already engaged nearly 80 volunteer industry leaders.
The board reviewed plans for the 2020 Bicycle Leadership Conference (BLC) that will be held April 14-16 in Monterey, CA. This will be the first BLC under PeopleForBikes’ ownership and direction. The event’s content and networking concepts have been reimagined to enhance learning, increase one-to-one connections and add inspirational takeaways.
This board meeting included discussion of the ongoing rollout of Ride Spot program and app, which PeopleForBikes introduced earlier this year in five key markets. Ride Spot is designed to reduce barriers to cycling and help people—particularly new and lapsed riders—find safe and fun routes. As the end of the year nears, the app is already being used by nearly 20,000 riders and 900 bicycle retailers.
In other business, the board discussed PFB’s proactive 2020 federal agenda that focuses on improving bicycle safety, increasing funding for infrastructure, and addressing crucial trade and tariff issues. They approved a balanced 2020 Coalition budget and an ambitious 2020 Workplan that details key strategic initiatives and identifies clear metrics.
The board approved PFB’s 2019 fall grant recipients. This grant round was dedicated to bike parks and pump tracks. PeopleForBikes Industry Community Grants Program is funded through the Employee Pro Purchase program, which collect donations from individuals who work in the industry and take advantage of pro-pricing on bike equipment. Batch, Cannondale, Giant, Niner, Shimano, Trek and Vaast currently participate.
